Shirley Sherrod & To Kill a Mockingbird

While not all conservatives had access to the real story like Breitbart might have, I'm wondering if, when he scoured the tapes to edit them, he might have been incensed at the real message in Shirley Sherrod's speech: that someone grew past their racial hatred to realize they are the same as the hated other, and worse, that a black person was in a position to feel sorry for and help a white and the whites wanted and were grateful for it.

The last time I heard a story like this was TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.

If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, a black man is accused of raping and beating a young white woman.

It becomes clear at the trial though that she was lonely,and was constantly asking the black guy to do chores around her house, which he did for free. Then when they were alone, she finally came on to him, but rather than kiss or have sex with her, he ran away.

Her father saw her advances through the window and beat her after the black man left.

It should have been clear to the jury that the black man couldn't have choked and punched the girl since he had one useless, deformed arm.

But the black man made a fatal mistake on the stand: when asked why he did the chores for free, he said he felt sorry for her.

And that struck at the jury's racist pride--they convicted him.

So it was with the Shirley Sherrod story.

Breitbart and Fox News peddled a story that fit the prejudices of their conservative audience: if a black person had any power, they would use it to harm or withhold help from whites (just as the conservatives know they would do themselves to blacks, Latinos, Muslims, gays, and others in that position).

But more outrageous to them than her imagined offense was the real one: her racism melted, she saw some white farmers as more like her own family than not, did everything in her power to help them, and they were grateful.

Maybe more offensive to them than that was she was in the position of power and the whites in need, was that her actions reminded conservatives why they are dying.

Not just through legislation and the Civil Rights movement, but slowly a person or family at a time, racial fear and hatred are being chipped away, until only the most hateful and ignorant hang on to it, like their favorite doll or teddy bear from childhood.

And their power will be dead when black and white folks alike can look at them and not feel fear or hatred, but simply sorry for them, like we would for a Boo Radley in our own family we were trying to draw out of his shell.

We aren't quite there yet though when the NAACP and the president of the United States still jump when our disturbed cousins say so, and abandon their posts as our Atticus Finches.

Remind public of GOP racist track record if they mention Wright

Both Obama and Hillary missed an opportunity when they went on Fox News only to be questioned about Rev. Wright. They could have turned it around to a discussion of Republican politician's, right wing talk radio, and even Fox News own far more extensive and virulent history of racist remarks and actions.

If the GOP tries to use Rev. Wright against Obama in fall, we should have their racist resume ready.

Which shouldn't be too hard to do.

Start with the Southern Strategy of covert appeals to Southern racists that began after LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act in 1964 & 1965. LBJ said he lost the South for the Democrats for a generation. He was wrong. He lost it pretty much up until today.

Racist white voters started voting Republican at the presidential level immediately, and down-ticket as racist Dixiecrats politicians migrated from the Democrats to the GOP.

In a 1970 New York Times interview, Nixon strategist Kevin Phillips was blunt about this:

The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats."

Reagan launched his campaign talking about "states rights" a segregationist buzzword in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where the three civil rights workers were killed in the 60s.

Starting with Reagan they began a sustained assault on affirmative action, particularly in college admissions, without bothering with even a fig-leaf of going after other forms of non-merit admissions like legacies with room temperature IQs getting in because their family members went to the school and more importantly, gave money to their endowment.

Using blacks as boogey men in campaign commercials has been a staple of the Republican politicians at all levels. Jesse Helms used his "white hands" commercial to play on white resentment of affirmative action, Papa Bush had Willie Horton to play on fear of black criminals raping white women, and the recent campaign against Harold Ford had only to imply that a white woman might want the only slightly tinted Ford to call her.

Until recently, there was the obligatory stop of GOP candidates at racist Bob Jones University, where inter-racial dating was not allowed until 2000--AFTER George W. Bush made a campaign stop.

There are also the various statements of Rush Limbaugh including his brief tenure as a sportscaster saying Donovan McNabb was only a quarterback because of affirmative action, and Bill O'Reilly being shocked that black people behaved in a nice restaurant and weren't screaming obscenities. Last Fall, Media Matters put together some of the greatest hits of Fox News racism, including Bill O'Reilly saying during Katrina that "Many, many, many" hurricane victims who failed to evacuate New Orleans are "drug-addicted ... thugs"

Besides Bush's inaction during Hurricane Katrina, you have Fox News calling black residents looters and whites "searching for supplies," and a GOP congressman saying the destruction of low income housing was god doing what they couldn't.

As recently as this primary season, Republicans were still debating whether the Confederate flag, a symbol of slavery and oppression to African Americans and most other Americans, should still fly on public property.

Mitt Romney said he would never have a Muslim in his cabinet.

In some of these cases of racism directed at blacks, the righties involved have been demoted or forced to apologize. I don't think they ever have apologized about their Muslim-baiting, particularly their talk radio shills.

Ann Coulter said Muslims should be killed or forcibly converted, Rush Limbaugh said a Muslim prisoner was covered in feces because they don't know how to wipe themselves, and Michael Savage Weiner said we should kill at least 100 million Muslims and that there was no difference the Muslims who attacked us on 9/11 and ALL the other Muslims in the world.

I have left out their Latin American immigrant-bashing, English only campaigns because they are mad someone's Vietnamese grandmother isn't learning English fast enough, fear of brown people breeding faster than whites, fear of gays recruiting our kids (so far they have only been successful with GOP politicians and preachers), and fear of anyone else they can think of that will drive people to the polls without demanding action on actual economic issues.

These are hardly the people to be lecturing the rest of us about racism.

I'm sure I've left lots of examples out, so feel free to add them.

VIDEO: Fox News news recycles Iraq propaganda for Iran

Mainstream TV news networks uncritically presented the Bush administration's exaggerations and outright lies that made up their case for war with Iraq, but Fox went the extra mile and called anyone who questioned the case for war a conspiracy theorist and traitor.

The guy who made this documentary made one shortly after the Iraq War started talking to intel experts in the CIA, State Department, and Pentagon about how intelligence was intentionally fabricated and distorted to sell the war. It took a few more years for most Americans to realize what he documented way back then.


He also did an excellent (and funny) one on propaganda methods used at Fox News. My favorite part is in the trailer when they say there aren't more black cops because they are afraid of water. I told somebody about that once and they refused to believe it until they saw it. Watch the trailer and see for yourself.


Now the drumbeat for war is starting again, this time for war with Iran.

So far, the public isn't listening. If they were, they might here some odd facts that counter the administration. For example, just as Bush was trying to say that Iran was helping the Taliban, his hand-picked president of Afghanistan said Iran was helping to STABILIZE his country.


The prime minister of Iraq seems to share the President of Afghanistan's view, much to Bush's frustration:


Iran hasn't helped their case by having a Holocaust denial conference, but that doesn't merit killing tens of thousands of Iranians and possibly starting a World War when Russia and China come to Iran's defense.

Military strategist at the Pentagon have said attacking Iran is a really, really dangerous idea. At the very least, they could finance terrorist attacks on American people and interests all over the world. At worst, China and Russia will not tolerate the US having an absolute stranglehold on the world's primary supply of oil.


Incidentally, China doesn't have to fire a single missile or send a single soldier to retaliate--they simply have to stop buying our debt that Bush is running up to pay for the war.

That could destroy our economy and either end the war, or with Bush at the wheel, more likely he'd spend the cash on hand to try to use our troops to hold onto Iraq and Iran's oil, and cut spending at home to the bone, so more bridges collapse, more natural disaster victims are ignored, kids and their family bear more of the brunt of college costs, and grandma's social security check won't come on time, so they'll kick her out of the home and she'll be living in your garage.

And that's the mildest scenario.

Russia has surface skimming nuclear anti-ship missiles, the Sunburn, that we have no countermeasures for, so one shot could kill the thousands of sailors and marines on one of our aircraft carriers in an instant. Things would go downhill from there.

It could be that the Bushies just do a token bombing of Iran to prove their manhood on the way out, and try to goad them into retaliating so Bush has an excuse to escalate, just as they are already doing by sending special forces into Iran. Ironically, in both instances, we are depending on Iran acting more responsibly than the Bush administration to prevent this from escalating to a world war.

None of this had to happen.

Shortly after we invaded Iraq, Iran made a sweeping peace proposal that was personally received by Karl Rove that would have recognized Israel and cut off funding for terror attacks in Israel, and helped us fight al Qaeda, something they offered to do from the start. They also offered tighter inspections of the nuclear program, which the Bushies are supposedly worried about. Bush ignored this overture, which probably didn't help the semi-moderates in Iran.


But you can't settle your difference with negotiation when the real agenda is seizing a country's oil assets worth tens of trillions of dollars which no government would give away on the terms Bush wants since they would risk the wrath of their own people. That is why the Iraqi parliament members are dragging their feet on passing the Bush backed Hydrocarbon Law that would give control of their oil to transnational corporations like ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, Shell, and BP. As much as the Iraqis fear Bush and the gun he has in their faces, they know their own people would not rest until they were dead if they gave away the one thing of value their country has: oil.

IRAQ OIL THEFT RESOURCES

Think of how hard the Iraqis are fighting us, now imagine adding a war on top of that with a country that has three times the population, six times the land area, more ethnic unity, and China and Russia backing them up.

Tell the networks to stop the propaganda and your congressman and senators that we have the tar and feathers ready if they make one move toward starting another unnecessary war.
